Couponing with Amy: Using New Customer Coupons When You’re Not a New Customer

January 14, 2012

Each week, our resident Couponista, Amy Leneker, shares her personal shopping experiences and extreme couponing tips so that you too can be a Coupon Expert!

While being the new girl in school has its challenges (trust me, I’ve been there), being the new girl at a business has its perks. Have you ever noticed all the “new customer” and “first time client” deals that are out there? Many of the deals offer huge savings because the business is just trying to get new customers. But what if you’re not new?

Longtime Subscriber, “New Customer” Coupon User

Newspapers are a great example. Recently my local paper was offering a great deal for “new customers.” With a coupon, the subscription rate for the paper was over 60 percent off. That’s a big savings! When I called the customer service office I explained that I had been subscribing for years and I would like to receive the same deal offered to new customers. It took several minutes on hold (and a conversation with the subscription manager) but they agreed to let me use the coupon and I saved 60 percent.

Cut the Cost with a Little Sweet Talking

I’ve been going to the same hair salon for years. They have a coupon for new clients to get a haircut and partial highlights for only $ 50 (regular price is $ 100, a savings of $ 50). They were offering “current clients” a free deep conditioning treatment. I don’t know about you but I would take 50 bucks over a deep conditioning treatment any day! I called the salon to see what they could do.

The Bottom Line

The bad news: they weren’t willing to honor the entire “new client” coupon. The good news: they said if I brought in the coupon, they would take 20 percent off my service in addition to the free deep conditioning treatment. My appointment is this week and the coupon is ready and waiting in my wallet! I also have a second coupon worth $ 5 off a salon purchase of $ 35 or more.

I feel better already!
