Couponing with Amy: A Real Deal on a Real Steel Party

My son had been waiting in eager anticipation for Real Steel to come out on DVD. When it finally did a few weeks back, he didn’t have to wait any longer. Not only was he going to get to watch the movie, we told him he could have a Real Steel Party and invite his friends over for Friday movie night. I did some comparison shopping to find the best deal. I considered Costco because it is hard to beat their prices on DVDs, but Safeway was offering a deal that was too good to pass up.

Free Is the Best Price

Safeway was offering a coupon that, if you bought the Real Steel DVD, gave you all of this for free:

  • Two 1.25 Liters of Coke
  • 1 bag of mini Oreos
  • 1 bag of Snack Artist chips

Not bad! What really made this a great deal, though, was that I had a couple of other coupons to use at Safeway that would make the trip worthwhile. And even better, it would be one-stop shopping for all the party supplies.

Coupons: A One-Two Punch

I had gotten Safeway’s grocery ad in the mail earlier that week, so I was prepared. I had pulled the store coupons I was going to need (Tombstone pizza, 16 ounce bag of carrots, and the Real Steel coupon) and went online to combine them with manufacture coupons (Tombstone pizza, Kraft Ranch dressing, JollyTime popcorn, FruitSnacks, and M&Ms). I wrote my list on an envelope and tucked all my coupons inside.

Gathering all the party supplies at Safeway reminded me of a game show I loved when I was little, Supermarket Sweep. Have you seen the show? People fly through the aisles of grocery stores, grabbing as much as they can, as quickly as they can. I went to Safeway after work and knew that I had less than 30 minutes to gather all the groceries and get home in time before my son’s friends started showing up. Turns out I didn’t even need half of that time! I was in and out of Safeway in only 15 minutes, and I saved a ton of money.

The Bottom Line

I ended up spending more on the DVD than I did on all the groceries!

Tombstonepizzas, on sale 3 for $ 9.99, minus 2/$ 1.00 coupon = $ 7.99 for 3

Carrots, 16 ounce bag, on store coupon = .99

Kraft Ranch dressing, on sale for $ 2.00, minus .50 coupon = $ 1.50

JollyTime popcorn, on sale 2/$ 4.00, minus $ 1. coupon = 2/$ 3.00

Fruit snacks, on store coupon = .99

M&Ms, on sale for $ 2.89, minus $ 1 coupon = $ 1.89

Two 1.25 liters of Sprite = FREE

1 bag of mini oreos = FREE

1 bag of Snack Artist Chips = FREE

Saving that much money was great, but it was even better to see my son and his friends have so much fun at their Real Steel party. They had a blast! Once the movie started, I made them treat bags with popcorn, fruit snacks and M&Ms. The treat bags were a hit. It wasn’t until I got home from dropping off my son’s friends that I realized I hadn’t opened the mini-Oreos for them. So once the whole house was asleep, I enjoyed some mini-Oreos and congratulated myself on what felt like a good mom moment.
